My cruise ship docks in Puerto Vallarta. What should I expect?

When you arrive in Puerto Vallarta, your ship will dock at the cruise terminal in Marina Vallarta, a short drive from downtown. The area around the port has shops, restaurants, and tour operators ready to welcome visitors. Taxis, Uber and other rideshares are easy to find. Buses are an affordable way to get around (10 pesos), but you must have exact change in pesos.

If you have only a few hours, a stroll along the Malecón, Puerto Vallarta’s famous boardwalk, is a great way to experience the city. You’ll find sculptures, street performers, local vendors, and plenty of restaurants with ocean views. The historic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is a short walk away, and nearby markets offer souvenirs, handmade crafts, and tequila tastings.

For those with more time, there are plenty of activities to choose from. Adventure seekers might enjoy zip-lining through the jungle, riding ATVs in the Sierra Madre mountains, or taking a boat tour to secluded beaches like Yelapa and Majahuitas. Search Vallarta Calendar for tours or take a look at our Attractions & Tours Guide. Beach lovers can relax at Playa Los Muertos, a lively spot with beachfront restaurants and bars. If you prefer something more exclusive, many resorts and beach clubs offer day passes for visitors.

Food is a highlight in Puerto Vallarta, whether you’re looking for fresh seafood, authentic tacos, or upscale dining. Tequila and mezcal tastings are also popular, giving visitors a chance to sample Mexico’s iconic spirits.

While many places accept credit cards, having some pesos on hand is useful for smaller purchases and tips.
