Playing Hooky
Yesterday, Bogie and I were up at 6 am (he insists). After he had been fed and watered, I decided to take the day off. Not get dressed, not write, look around my slight disaster of a house, and do whatever presents itself. A couple of sewing projects that have been staring me in the face. I am sooooo good at making piles, like making lists, but these are actual physical things that need something done to them – donate, repair, throw away!, replace the elastic, sew one seam, it isn’t rocket science!
The trick is to start. To pick up one piece and try to make it right – there are lots more waiting – and I did. At the end of the day, I had three pieces that were otherwise not wearable, and now they are, after I iron them, which I may or may not do today because, right after this, I am taking the rest of today off too!
This is how semi-retirement is supposed to be, and I am loving it. Oh, and I am having baked spaghetti for breakfast! Topped with fresh, chopped green onions, and fabulously expensive parmesan cheese and chili flakes.
I went over to La Catrina Cantina on Wednesday night to listen to Angeloo and sat with La CC owner, Juan Alvarado. Angeloo, who is 12 years old (only for a couple more days), is raising money to fly with his dad to Los Angeles and audition in person for America’s Got Talent. He has a show every Wednesday at 8 pm, so please, if you are in town, go and see him, tip him generously, and one day you’ll be able to say, ”I saw that kid in Mexico, before he became a ——————.” You can fill in those blanks with whatever you think is fair as long as it starts with ‘Brilliant.’
Do you know who Dimash is? If not, run to YouTube and have a listen. You will hear the obvious similarities immediately between Dimash and Angeloo. The huge difference is this: Dimash will be 32 years old in May; Angel will be 13 and can learn a new Dimash song in a day. It’s tricky because Dimash sings in eight languages. So does Angeloo. Don’t miss his next show, and please help him get to LA. He is one special child who is completely self-taught. A prodigy to be sure, ready to take on big stages anywhere. All he needs is our combined help!
I left La CC and went to give birthday hugs to my old friend Mike Laking at Bar Frida: Seventy-two and counting. Owner of Frida’s, Tom Finley, was there, nursing some of his special, delicious tequila, as was John Car, dressed as Frida, for the occasion. Tonny Kenneth was in fine form, entertaining, and the two birthday cakes looked amazing. I was, like Mike, ready for bed, so I slipped away into the night before I succumbed to the sugar rush. Happy Birthday again, Mike, my friend. As you pointed out, there are not many of us left, so let us ”eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die,” From Here.
