Canadian Thanksgiving in Puerto Vallarta

Canadian Thanksgiving, celebrated on the second Monday of October, is a holiday for giving thanks for the harvest and the past year’s blessings. Its origins date back to 1578, when explorer Martin Frobisher held a feast in Newfoundland to celebrate surviving his Arctic voyage, predating American Thanksgiving.

Officially declared a holiday in 1879, Canadian Thanksgiving is more rooted in European harvest festivals than the American Pilgrims’ feast. Held in October due to Canada’s earlier harvest season, the celebration features turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, along with regional dishes like butter tarts, perogies, or tourtière.

Though a statutory holiday in most provinces, some, like Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, do not officially observe it. Thanksgiving is a time for Canadians to gather with family, share a meal, and reflect on life’s blessings.
