Steven Retchless Channels Britney Spears in ‘The Woman in Me’
Steven Retchless presents The Woman in Me a groundbreaking tribute to the iconic Britney Spears that takes audiences beyond her legendary performances to explore the story of her triumphs, struggles, and unyielding resilience. Inspired by Britney’s number-one bestselling memoir, this production blends themes of autonomy, freedom, and survival with explosive choreography and stunning visuals. The show is performed at Coco Cabaret every Monday at 8 PM.
Steven, a finalist on “America’s Got Talent” and renowned for his pole artistry, brings his multifaceted talents to the stage. The Woman in Me features dazzling choreography that includes pole work, chair dance, and striptease, as well as multimedia elements and breathtaking costume changes. Joining him on stage are four powerhouse dancers who amplify the energy and emotion of this unforgettable production. For Britney fans, this tribute promises special moments, while anyone who appreciates dynamic and heartfelt performances will leave thoroughly entertained.
Steven’s journey as a performer began in the entertainment capital of Las Vegas, where he was born and raised. Splitting his formative years between Vegas and Puerto Vallarta, he was deeply influenced by the vibrant cultures of both cities. Steven’s early love for performance started with school showcases, but his career took flight when he became a trailblazer in the pole dance community. Known for his distinctive blend of androgyny and sex appeal, he earned acclaim as a competitor, teacher, judge, and performer.
Returning to Puerto Vallarta, which he considers his personal paradise, Steven immersed himself in cabaret arts. He honed his skills in singing, dancing, acting, and choreographing, often exploring the world of drag. His growth as an artist was hard-earned, overcoming stage fright and the emotional hurdles of producing his own shows. Steven’s transformation from a shy performer to a confident and comedic drag queen with a deep, resonant message is a testament to his resilience and dedication.
Reflecting on the challenges of preparing The Woman in Me, Steven shared, “My house turned into a full-on production studio while prepping this show. Between dance rehearsals and green screen sessions, I’ve been Britney, Michael Jackson in concert, and even a podcast host dissecting her conservatorship. The highlight? A dance battle with my own reflection to the same song on repeat. Honestly, my neighbors probably think I’ve lost it—or that I’m filming the next big Netflix special.”
He added that his preparation routine is as meticulous as it is transformative. “Do you have a couple of hours? This might take a while,” Steven joked. “Beyond the usual self-care, there’s a checklist of technical prep: costumes, setting up the pole, coordinating with dancers, stretching, sound check, and prop placement. But the real transformation happens in the afternoon—shaving, makeup, body bronzer, glitter, wig taping, and gluing on the iconic belly ring. By the time I’m walking to the theater, I’m Britney from the neck up and Steven from the neck down, turning it out down the Río Cuale, going to work bitch.”
This dedication to detail and authenticity is reflected in every aspect of The Woman in Me, a show that has evolved since its debut at Coco Cabaret in November. “Once the show is out there, I’m realizing it’s a labor of love to keep it alive, and that means embracing growth and inevitable changes,” Steven noted. “The show evolves every week—whether it’s a new costume, a different dancer, a light cue change, a new number, or even cutting an entire number altogether. I thought the hardest part was the labor pains of birthing the show, but it’s the nurturing and dedication required to keep it alive that truly takes sacrifice.”
Steven’s personal connection to Britney Spears and her music brings a unique depth to the production. “To me, Britney represents freedom. Her music wakes something up in me—it makes me want to move with confidence. Watching her overcome her conservatorship and live authentically inspires me to embrace my imperfections and share my art unapologetically. Perfection is boring, and flaws are what make us unique. That’s the message I bring to the stage every night,” Steven explained.
The venue, Coco Cabaret, provides the perfect setting for this innovative and immersive tribute. Located just one block from the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone, Coco Cabaret combines 25 years of cabaret experience with state-of-the-art features, including LED video screens, incredible lighting and sound systems, and a stylish mezzanine balcony. With comfortable seating, signature cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s quickly become a favorite destination for both locals and visitors seeking top-tier entertainment.
Steven’s connection to the Puerto Vallarta audience adds another layer of magic to the show. “I’m really proud of the following I’ve built over the years and deeply appreciate the local community in PV that shows up to all my shows. It’s always interesting to see who’s in the audience and who connects with you—it feels like a reflection of yourself in a way,” he shared. “I’m grateful that my audience is made up of kind, loving, accepting people, with a mix of innocence and rebellion. It’s special to have such a diverse group of neighbors enjoy and support my performances.”
The Woman in Me is more than just a tribute to Britney Spears; it’s a celebration of resilience, authenticity, and artistic freedom.
