Christine Deaver Brings “Big & Brassy” Jazz to Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is abuzz with excitement as the incomparable Christine Deaver returns to the stage, bringing her signature mix of humor, charm, and powerhouse vocals to Coco Cabaret. Her latest show, Big & Brassy, promises to be an unforgettable evening of music, laughter, and pure entertainment.
After captivating audiences for decades with Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago, Christine is now taking Puerto Vallarta by storm. Known for her razor-sharp comedic timing and her ability to command a stage, she is a performer like no other. Her newest production pairs her with a dynamic brass band aptly named “The Brassholes,” ensuring an electrifying night of live music. The show takes place every Saturday at 6 PM, offering a prime-time weekend treat for locals and visitors alike.
Coco Cabaret, a thrilling new venue located just one block from the action in the Romantic Zone, takes 25 years of cabaret experience to create the very best entertainment environment in Vallarta. With three LED video screens, soaring ceilings, incredible lighting and sound systems, a stylish mezzanine balcony, and a stunning remodel of the building, Coco Cabaret is a state-of-the-art venue designed to impress. Known for its comfortable seating, signature cocktails, and the friendly, welcoming staff of The Palm Cabaret & Bar, Coco Cabaret offers performances seven days a week at 6, 8, and 10 PM. “This venue is the perfect blend of style and substance,” notes one visitor, “delivering an entertainment experience like no other in the area.”
Christine’s repertoire spans a delightful mix of obscure gems and beloved classics, all delivered with her signature flair. Whether she’s belting out a show-stopping ballad like Pat Benatar’s 80s classic Love Is A Battlefield or delivering a high-energy, modern hit like Lizzo’s Juice, Christine’s versatility and talent shine through. The show’s style combines old and new, reworking popular modern music into different genres, ensuring it appeals to more than just jazz lovers. “Mark Rome came up with the idea of doing a show with a big band sound,” Christine explains. “And I love horns! I’m a horny, kind of gal.”
The journey to creating Big & Brassy hasn’t been without its challenges. With a limited rehearsal period and coordinating schedules for 15 people, Christine and her band have had to fine-tune the show as they go. “The band doesn’t speak very much English, and I speak restaurant Spanish, so communicating has been interesting,” she shares with a laugh. Despite these hurdles, the result is a polished performance filled with heart, humor, and incredible talent.
Christine’s preparation process is as lively as her performances. “We do a sound check, and I sing parts of a few songs, hit a few challenging notes, then head back to the dressing room to start the process of putting on makeup, costume, and wig. I mean, my completely natural hair,” she quips. “The higher the hair, the closer to God.”
For Christine, this show represents a professional and personal milestone. “I think as an artist, it is very important to challenge yourself. I have never done a show here in PV with a band. I usually work with tracks, but this is something completely new, and I love it.” As the show continues to evolve, Christine isn’t afraid to make adjustments. “We’ve changed the order of some songs and are tightening things up. I’m also going to wear something different because my mother saw the video and said, ‘Uh, what were you thinking wearing that dress?’” she laughs. “Opening night is a success if no one died.”
Coco Cabaret’s vibrant atmosphere complements Christine’s dynamic performance style perfectly. With its sleek design and state-of-the-art technology, the venue enhances every aspect of the show. Christine’s connection with Puerto Vallarta also adds a personal touch to her performances. “I love PV, and I have been coming here for many years. My parents lived here for 20 years. I love the vibrant colors, the food, the art, the culture, and the street dogs. I want to adopt all of them!” she says with affection.
The combination of Christine’s charisma, the band’s extraordinary talent, and the cutting-edge venue creates a unique experience that transcends traditional cabaret. By blending old and new, Big & Brassy offers something for everyone. Jazz enthusiasts will revel in the lush brass arrangements, while fans of contemporary music will appreciate the fresh takes on modern hits. This dynamic mix ensures the show resonates with a diverse audience. Christine and her band reimagine songs in unexpected ways, ensuring that even familiar tunes feel fresh and exciting.
