Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos)

The Day of the Dead Festival in Puerto Vallarta has gained special relevance in recent years.

As part of these celebrations, Puerto Vallarta earned the distinction of “The Tallest Catrina Skull in the World” from Guinness World Records for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.

The monumental catrina, more than 27 meters high, became the central artistic piece of a celebration that included the placement of altars of the dead, more than 80 giant “sugar skulls” decorated with various motifs throughout the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta and a complete program of cultural activities.

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Puerto Vallarta conclude with the obligatory visit to the cemeteries on November 2.

The cemetery in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, for example, becomes a family festival: while the people of Vallarta come to honor their deceased, outside in the surrounding area it is possible to find a variety of vendors selling fresh marigold flowers, Mexican snacks, bread of the dead, and even mariachis!
