Gay Mixer and Open Mic
If indeed our season is winding down, nobody alerted the gay community!
I was looking forward to the Gay Mixer at Pinnacle Resorts, mostly because the space is gigantic with open, sweeping views of the bay and our lovely city. Fifteen minutes after the event began, over 250 people were occupying every square inch of floor space, and not a seat to be had. And more pouring through the door. My dear friend Jerry Jones, publisher of Out & About Puerto Vallarta Magazine, created a monster a couple of seasons back when he wanted to give back to his advertisers by showcasing their properties. It has become a huge part of Jerry’s week: every Tuesday, for at least 2 hours, for 6 months! They will end this year right after Pride in May. I can hear the projected sigh of relief from here! They are a great, squeezed-in-tight way to make new friends. You will have no choice! Next Gay Mixer, March 31st, 6 to 8 pm, is at Villa Sevilla, next to the gorgeous Casa Cupula Hotel.
The penultimate Open Mic for this season was held last night at Nacho Daddy with Gouda Gabor. Gouda, recovering from recent surgery, wore dark glasses all night, giving her a mysterious air. Lots of entertainers in the audience, including a delightful older couple visiting from the Milwaukee/Wisconsin area. Alejandro delivered a wonderful ”Circle of Life” in English and Spanish, and countertenor Arturo will be heading home to Guanajuato very soon. Georgia Darehshori will miss hearing him. Me too.
With Bing Young on piano, Gene Berube sang a sweet song that he dedicated to our tourists and snowbirds who are flocking north, and leaving a big, empty space behind them.
Robert Ryan sang, as did David Jay. Robert Earl Adams started the show, which he has done all season. One more Open Mic, Robert, before you fly away! Speaking of flying, Gouda checked WestJet as she considered heading back to Vancouver Island a little earlier this year. A one-way ECONOMY seat was 2800 dollars!!! That means we’ll have Gouda around for a bit longer!
Captain Lydia Damato, who helps Gouda coordinate Open Mic and also calls the balls for Colina Spay and Neuter Clinic bingo every other Wednesday, is finally back from her Rhine River cruise. We sent her a video and pics from bingo last week, when I won the jackpot. It is lovely to have her back home.
Scrabble today at the Q(ulture) at 12:30. My last chance playing Anju, who heads back to the States in a week, and is the best player I have ever come up against. Although my smashed ego won’t be sad to see her go, it is such a rare opportunity to better my game. She is fierce. Sharon Gerber Scherer will be back today so I will have to juggle my time.
Happy Birthday greetings today to Mike Laking, an outstanding photographer and Director at Bar Frida. I may see you for a shot of Tom Finley’s fine tequila tonight, my friend, From Here.
