Laughter, Courage and Community Take Center Stage at What A Drag!
On Sunday, March 8 at 8 PM, the curtain will rise once again at Teatro Vallarta for one of Puerto Vallarta’s most anticipated and meaningful nights of the year: What A Drag! Now celebrating its 12th year, this wildly entertaining straight-men-in-drag beauty competition continues to prove that sequins and stilettos can do far more than sparkle — they can change lives.
Presented by Nacho Daddy, the annual event blends musical comedy, outrageous transformation and heartfelt purpose into one unforgettable evening, all in support of Casa Esperanza Women’s Shelter, operated by Compassion for the Family.
At first glance, What A Drag! delivers exactly what audiences have come to love: dazzling costumes, dramatic reveals, choreographed dance numbers, bold makeup, unexpected sass and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. It is theatrical, playful and unapologetically over the top.
But beneath the wigs and glitter lies something much deeper.

More Than a Show: The Mission Behind the Magic
Each year, What A Drag! raises critical funds for Casa Esperanza Women’s Shelter, which provides emergency housing, food, counseling, childcare, job training and life-skills support to women and children escaping domestic violence. For many residents, the shelter represents not just safety, but the first step toward rebuilding a life free from fear.
As Event Coordinator Freda Thompson explains, the evolution of the event is intentional.
“As What A Drag! enters its 12th year, we’re being very intentional about evolving the event in ways that deepen its impact while protecting the joy, humor and heart that make people return every March,” she says. “The show will always be a musical comedy celebration, but we’re weaving the mission more clearly into the experience — helping the audience understand why their laughter, applause and generosity matter.”
This year, that connection between stage and shelter will be even more visible. Through brief storytelling moments, survivor-centered messaging and clear calls to action, the production will thoughtfully connect the high-energy spectacle to the real lives it supports. Contestants are also stepping into expanded roles as ambassadors, while sponsorship opportunities are structured to directly fund specific shelter needs.
The formula remains fabulous. The purpose is clearer than ever.
A Stage Full of Courage
This year’s lineup of contestants promises an evening of high drama and high heels, as Burkhard Eichberger transforms into Frau G-string, Ken Brownlee becomes Marina Del Slay, David Abiram channels Davina Divine, Warren Porter steps forward as Madame Bordeaux, Dave Neilson takes on the persona of Ellie Vez, Daniel Villasenor embraces Mamá Dora, Alfredo Meraz brings Mama Cass to life, and Cary Thompson debuts as Feather Lock-Lear.

Each man has volunteered to step far outside his comfort zone, pairing with experienced Fairy Drag Mothers and professional makeup artists as they compete for the coveted Miss What A Drag! title. What begins as curiosity often becomes something deeply personal — and unexpectedly transformative.
For Cary Thompson, that transformation is happening at age 55, and for the very first time.
“I’ve always tried to live life to the fullest and take chances that many will never have the courage to do,” Cary says. “At 55 this will be the first time ever in my life that I will be doing a drag show. Scared and emotional for sure.”
He’s learning choreography, practicing in five-inch heels and preparing to perform in front of hundreds — possibly thousands — of people. The vulnerability is real, but so is the motivation.
“This is for a great cause and a huge fundraiser for battered women,” he says. “I’m glad that I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and able to help others and actually help myself along the way. I’m in it to win it — unless I break my ankle during the dance routine in five-inch heels… lol.”
That mix of courage, humor and heart is exactly what has defined What A Drag! for more than a decade.

The Art of Transformation
Behind every contestant is a team guiding the metamorphosis.
Cary’s Fairy Drag Mother, Richard Carnegie, brings pageant experience, choreography expertise and theatrical flair to the process. On day one, he offered advice rooted in his own drag journey: use the persona as a kind of mask — not to hide, but to unlock something unexpected.
“When he gets in drag, he won’t recognize himself,” Richard says. “A totally different and sassy side came out of me whenever I was in drag. I told him you can become someone else. Let’s see what happens.”
Richard laughs about his first impression of Cary — who arrived late after fixing his truck and riding in on a motorcycle. “God save me!” he recalls. But beneath the humor is careful intention. “We are going to be campy and hilarious, but I didn’t want to throw too much at him knowing he will already feel vulnerable.”
Completing Feather Lock-Lear’s transformation is makeup artist Wendy Warhol, known for visually striking, high-concept drag artistry. Working with someone new to drag, she explains, requires preparation and collaboration.
“I definitely can’t go on autopilot the way I sometimes do with my own makeup,” she says. “If I don’t know the person personally, I’ll ask for a photo first so I can study their facial structure in advance and think through what would suit them best. Then, when we’re together, I reassess in person, confirm my vision and let the magic happen.”
She hopes Cary feels “powerful, unapologetic, unstoppable and sassy” when he sees himself fully realized in the mirror.
For Wendy, participation in What A Drag! carries personal meaning. As a domestic violence survivor, the cause resonates deeply. “This will be my first time being part of What A Drag!, and I’m honored,” she says. “The fact that this project has been running for years and continues to make an impact is something I truly admire.”
A Host Who Brings the House Down
Guiding the evening’s festivities is powerhouse entertainer Amy Armstrong, whose incredible vocals, razor-sharp wit and infectious humor make her the perfect emcee for a night that demands both glamour and generosity.
Born and raised in Detroit, Amy transformed early challenges into defining strengths, building a career that has spanned nearly three decades of performances at LGBTQ+ events and on gay cruises worldwide. Now a cherished member of the Puerto Vallarta community, she frequently takes the stage at Nacho Daddy, delivering unforgettable shows filled with music, comedy and connection.
Her larger-than-life presence ensures that What A Drag! will move seamlessly between laugh-out-loud comedy and heartfelt moments of purpose.

Opening Hearts Through Humor
After 12 years, What A Drag! continues to strike a rare balance. It is playful and over-the-top. It is campy and bold. But it is also grounded in empathy, respect and purpose.
On March 8, audience members won’t simply be cheering for their favorite contestant. Their ticket purchases, applause and generosity will directly support emergency shelter beds, counseling services, childcare programs and the essential resources that allow women and children to rebuild their lives.
In a world that often feels heavy, What A Drag! reminds us that joy can be generous. That courage can be contagious. That stepping into five-inch heels — even for one night — can help someone else take their first steps toward safety and hope.
When the spotlight hits the stage at Teatro Vallarta, it won’t just illuminate sequins and stilettos.
It will illuminate a community choosing laughter, compassion and action — together.
The wigs are ready. The heels are high. The mission is clear. What A Drag! returns Sunday, March 8 at 8 PM at Teatro Vallarta. Join the celebration, cheer on your favorite queen, and help change lives. Tickets are available now.
