On Being Lazy
It is so lovely to be (semi-) retired; it has been six weeks since the last issue of Vallarta Mirror was published. Perhaps this month – February is pivotal in Vallarta – someone will come forward with the drive, energy, and resources to make a PV Mirror comeback. There have been a couple of nibbles; I believe that person will see the immense potential for tourists and foreign residents this month.
Scrabble was brutal on Wednesday. We had our monthly tournament, which I won in two straight. I won the third game against a different partner, then took on the best player I have ever encountered in all my years of playing Scrabble. By some miracle, after three games, my brain was so fried, I won that one, too. My luck stopped there – bingo at Nacho Daddy didn’t even cough up a raffle prize! But, the Colina Spay & Neuter Clinic won, so that’s the point, right?
Speaking of Scrabble, our Club’s founder, Randy Thomas, was back for a brief visit after being away for at least 18 months. It was wonderful to see him again and let him win one game, because it seemed like the right thing to do (LOL!).
Sharon Gerber Scherer has been MIA from Scrabble ever since she decided to produce ”Chicago the Musical” at Act2PV. That show premieres tonight with a ‘black & bling’ cocktail party before the curtain rises at 6:30 pm. I will see you in Ovations Bar at 5:45ish.
I had a delicious lunch at Langostinos yesterday with Merv Buchanan, the Canadian impresario who brings some of the finest tribute shows to Mexico. We have known one another for 13 years and have worked together publicizing his talented performers from day one. Merv is responsible for introducing tribute shows to Vallarta and Bucerias (and other parts of this country). He received some pushback at first from venue owners, one of whom insisted that tribute shows would never fly.
That was then, and this is now: what a difference tribute shows have made in the landscape of Vallarta’s entertainment industry.
So, thanks, Merv, for persevering all these years, including during COVID. Some of my very favorite evenings in Vallarta were spent by the river at El Rio BBQ Bar listening to Fleetwood Mac, the Bee Gees, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Eagles, and more. And with the audience’s encouragement and acceptance of these imported tribute shows, our local singers have produced brilliant Pink, Freddie Mercury, Bruno Mars, Sam Smith, Bruce Springsteen, and Beyoncé Tribute shows, just to name a few.
Coming up this weekend around town: Chicago the Musical opening tonight at Act2PV; Saturday at 10 am on the Isla Cuale, herbalist Ricardo Mazcal’s Weekend Market runs until 2 pm. Saturday night at 5, has The Boss at Palm Cabaret, starring Mau Jimenez in a kick ass rock and roll tribute to Bruce Springsteen. For more information on these and dozens of other shows happening around town, go to VallartaCalendar.com From Here.
