Big Hair, Bigger Feelings, and a One-Man Musical Event

If the idea of attending a Spanish-language musical gives you pause, The MEN-TI-RAS Experience is here to change your mind—and probably your playlist. This iconic Mexican musical comedy is now delighting audiences in Puerto Vallarta under the guidance of Sargento Dan, proving that laughter, love, and 1980s pop anthems don’t require translation. With just five performances this season, The MEN-TI-RAS Experience offers a limited opportunity to experience a show that blends humor, heart, and pure theatrical joy, best enjoyed with an open mind, a sense of humor, and maybe a margarita.

At its core, The MEN-TI-RAS Experience is a deliciously dramatic tale: four women come together at the funeral of the same man, only to discover they were all deeply—and unknowingly—entangled with him. In this Puerto Vallarta production, there is a bold theatrical twist that immediately sets it apart: Sargento himself takes on the role of all four women. Through rapid costume changes, clever visual cues, and sharply defined physicality, he fully embodies each character, turning the stage into a whirlwind of personalities, secrets, and comedic chaos.

The Original MEN-TI-RAS Phenomenon

MEN-TI-RAS first premiered in Mexico City in 2009 and quickly became a landmark of Spanish-language musical theater. Built around a medley of beloved Mexican pop songs from the 1980s, the original production follows four women—Lupita, Yuri, Daniela, and Dulce—as they investigate the mysterious death of Emanuel Mijares. What begins as a humorous mystery evolves into a smart and heartfelt exploration of love, betrayal, and the complicated bonds between women who share more than they ever expected.

The show’s playful structure, combined with its emotionally resonant use of familiar music, struck a chord with audiences and helped turn MEN-TI-RAS into a cultural phenomenon. Its success laid the foundation for countless adaptations and reinterpretations, including the inventive solo version now finding a home in Puerto Vallarta.

Reimagining a Mexican Classic for Vallarta

When Sargento chose to bring MEN-TI-RAS to Puerto Vallarta, it was both a creative and a personal decision. “The music was what pulled me in first,” he says. “Those songs are part of who we are. You hear them, and suddenly you’re remembering your first love, your first heartbreak, your first dramatic moment.”

But beyond nostalgia, he saw an opportunity to build a bridge between cultures. “This is a Mexican musical, absolutely,” he explains, “but the story is universal. I wanted my American friends and English-speaking audiences to feel included. You don’t need to understand every word to understand the emotions.”

That inclusive approach defines this adaptation, especially through its most daring choice: presenting the entire story through one performer. By placing himself at the center of the action as narrator, guide, and the four women themselves, Sargento creates an experience that feels intimate, accessible, and irresistibly theatrical.

Comedy, Drama, and Emotional Whiplash

One of the greatest strengths of The MEN-TI-RAS Experience is its ability to swing effortlessly between outrageous comedy and genuine emotional depth. The audience may be laughing at an exaggerated reaction one moment and feeling the sting of heartbreak the next.

“I lead you through a lot of emotions,” Sargento says. “There’s tons of comedy, but also real drama. That’s life, right?”

Music plays a vital role in navigating those emotional shifts. Accompanied by musicians Edgar Bernache and Ismael Nuño, the production uses live music to ground even its most over-the-top moments in sincerity. The songs are not just nostalgic crowd-pleasers; they serve as emotional punctuation, giving weight to revelations and resonance to the humor.

One Performer, Four Women

In this Puerto Vallarta version, The MEN-TI-RAS Experience becomes a bold one-man parody adaptation, with Sargento portraying Lupita, Yuri, Daniela, and Dulce entirely on his own. Each character is clearly defined through costume, color coding, vocal tone, and physicality, allowing the audience to instantly recognize who is who—even as the performer switches roles at lightning speed.

“Yes, it’s a lot,” he laughs. “But that’s part of the fun.”

In addition to playing all four women, Sargento also acts as the show’s narrator and host. He breaks the fourth wall, clarifies plot points, and makes sure no one ever feels lost.

“I’ll hold your hand the whole way,” he says. “No Spanish or background needed. I promise you’ll understand all the details.”

A Story That Transcends Language

That promise is central to the show’s appeal. The MEN-TI-RAS Experience relies heavily on physical comedy, expressive storytelling, and musical cues to communicate its plot and emotional beats. Audiences respond instinctively, often laughing or reacting in unison, regardless of language fluency.

The result is a shared experience that feels joyful and inclusive—an evening where locals, expats, and visitors find themselves on the same emotional wavelength, cheering, laughing, and occasionally gasping together.

The Making of Sargento

Sargento Dan’s journey to the stage began early. Originally from northern Mexico, he discovered his passion for performing as a child, with his first stage experience coming from a kindergarten singing contest. By the age of 14, he had fallen deeply in love with Broadway—a fascination that would shape not only his musical tastes, but his entire approach to performance.

That Broadway influence is evident in everything he does onstage, from his vocal delivery to his timing and his ability to move effortlessly between comedy and emotion. “If you think about it, MEN-TI-RAS is still a musical,” he says. “It hasn’t been on Broadway, but it’s a musical. Vocals plus humor—that’s very on brand for me.”

In 2012, he relocated to Jalisco, first to Guadalajara and later to Puerto Vallarta, carrying that Broadway-inspired sensibility with him. One of his earliest public appearances in the city came during the preliminary auditions of the RISE talent competition, held at Nacho Daddy. The competition’s finale took place at Teatro Vallarta, where Sargento earned first runner-up—a milestone that helped open doors and solidify his commitment to pursuing a career in performance.

“Those experiences gave me confidence,” he says. “They showed me what was possible.”

Today, that blend of Broadway flair and Mexican pop culture defines his work. In The MEN-TI-RAS Experience, he channels classic musical theater energy through the lens of 1980s Mexican hits and theatrical parody, creating a style that feels both polished and playful, familiar and completely his own.

The MEN-TI-RAS Experience at Nacho Daddy

The venue plays an essential role in the show’s success. Nacho Daddy, a lively “Tropical House of Blues,” has been a Puerto Vallarta staple since 2009, known for its Mex-Tex fusion cuisine, famous nachos, signature margaritas, and welcoming atmosphere.

For co-owner Tammy Carruthers Prust, presenting shows like The MEN-TI-RAS Experience reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting the local arts community. “We have so many amazing artists in Vallarta, and we love showcasing unique shows at Nacho Daddy,” she says. “From the beginning, this space was about more than just food. It’s about bringing people together—where everyone feels welcome—through experiences that feel fun, inclusive, and a little unexpected. Supporting live entertainment and featuring local favorites has always been part of who we are.”

Why MEN-TI-RAS Works

At its heart, The MEN-TI-RAS Experience is about connection—between characters, between cultures, and between performer and audience. Watching one actor take on four women with humor, empathy, and precision only heightens that connection, reminding us of theater’s ability to transform through imagination alone.

By reimagining this beloved Mexican musical as a one-man performance for Puerto Vallarta’s diverse community, Sargento has created something special: a night of theater that welcomes everyone and leaves them smiling long after the final note.
