Gay Mixing with Open Mic Night

After a very productive and well-attended board meeting of the Vallarta Garden Club at Di Vino Dante’s Restaurante, I walked slowly down Basilio Badillo to Olas Altas and hung a left.

The sky was threatening rain, but even that didn’t put a damper on the number of people (over 200!) who poured into Kathleen Carrillo’s three-story art gallery and Ron Morgan’s real estate offices on the second floor. There was a bar on each of the four floors in this recently and beautifully renovated building across from The Palm Cabaret.

I sat with Ron for some time, wondering out loud how a highly successful real estate broker could share space with an equally successful contemporary artist. It has worked seamlessly for them. After you have purchased a property, you can decorate your walls at the same time. Makes perfectly beautiful sense.

Kathleen was busy on the third floor in front of a large canvas covered with love offerings for Vallarta. If you get to see it, the two purple hearts are mine. It was a lovely interactive event at the Gay Mixer. My friends Ric Roc and Joe Schwachter pop up wherever I go, so I should share a photo of the three of us. These two have been together for more than 40 years and are still madly in love; it is a huge case of hope!

The three of us ended up at Nacho Daddy for Open Mic. Richard Lucas hosted the show as his alter ego, Gouda Gabor, was still in bed (alone) recovering from her birthday shenanigans the night before—happy Birthday to Richard and Gouda. Seventy-two looks good on them both!

Larry Hohm is a professional storyteller and is often at Open Mic reciting short stories and broke our brains last night with Sleeping Beauty told in Spoonerisms. It was hard to listen to but hilarious. Incidentally, Larry has a fundraiser at the International Friendship Club, for the IFC, tomorrow, March 05 from 5 to 6:30. One thing I love about watching Larry is he speaks from memory and never reads a line or uses notes of any kind. His show tomorrow is called ”Murder in the Afternoon.” Go, support him and the good works that stem from the IFC.

Two international participants in reality shows were onstage last night – Ada Vox, who all of Vallarta knows and loves, and a newcomer to Mexico – Jasmine Rice, whom I saw for the first time at the Mr Vallarta Finale. I was so impressed, I immediately reserved a seat for her show this Friday at Coco Cabaret at 7 pm. What a voice! Wowza. Bing Young accompanied both singers on piano. Jasmine and Richard spoke a little before she sang. We learned Jasmine is North Korean and received a Golden Buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent. I cannot wait to see her the day after tomorrow.

Zoe Lewis also sang; her last show for the season is this Sunday at The Palm Cabaret. I saw ”Fabuloso” and it is just that – fabulous, so go!

Scrabble Tournament today at the Q, followed by bingo for the Colina Spay and Neuter Clinic at Nacho Daddy at 4 pm. Tomorrow at 9 pm, there is a concert at Santa Cruz Church in honor of our beloved Jean-Guy Comeau, who died last year in his native Canada. Wish me luck at Scrabble, taking tomorrow off to register my cell phone at the TelCel office. So see you here, there, and everywhere until Friday morning, From Here.
